Boiler and heating costs in Ireland (2026): gas, oil and heat pumps

Quick answer: a like-for-like gas boiler replacement in Ireland typically costs €2,300–€4,900 supplied and fitted, including VAT (Gasworks.ie), and a new oil boiler €2,900–€5,500 installed (Selectra). SEAI’s median heat pump cost for houses was €16,000–€17,000 in the first half of 2026, before a grant of up to €12,500. There is no grant for a new gas or oil boiler. All figures checked September 2026.

Oil and gas heat most Irish homes. Census 2022 found oil was the main central heating fuel in 38.9% of households and natural gas in 32.7%, with electricity (mostly heat pumps and storage heaters) at 11.8%. The mix changes sharply by place: in Dublin City 60% of households use gas, while in Galway City almost half use oil. This guide gives the national price ranges first, then the grants that change the sums. Every figure names its source and was checked in September 2026; where we could not source a figure, we have left it out.

Boiler and heating prices by job

Gas and oil boiler figures are published price lists and cost guides from installers and fuel suppliers, not independent surveys. The heat pump and controls figures are SEAI medians, calculated from the costs registered contractors submitted when grants were paid, which makes them the most robust numbers here.

Grants in September 2026: what is open

SEAI heat pump system grant (September 2026)Amount
Heat pump unit (air, ground, exhaust air or water to water)Up to €6,500
Central heating upgrade (new radiators or underfloor heating), where neededUp to €2,000
Renewable Heat Bonus for replacing an oil or gas boiler, solid fuel system or electric storage heating€4,000
Total for a house (detached, semi-detached, terrace)Up to €12,500
Total for an apartmentUp to €9,500
Air-to-air heat pump (no hot water)Up to €7,500
Technical assessment (needed for most homes built before 2007)€200

SEAI’s heat pump grant applies to homes built and occupied before 2021. Homes built before 2007 need a technical assessment unless a valid BER shows a heat loss indicator of 2.3 W/K·m² or less, and you must have grant approval before work starts. You cannot receive more than the cost of the works.

On 29 September 2026 the Government approved a new €2,000 boiler scrappage grant for homes built before 2021 that replace a fossil fuel heating system with a heat pump or other renewable heating. RTÉ reports that the scheme starts in the first quarter of 2027, while SEAI says homeowners with a heat pump grant application already in progress will receive the extra €2,000 automatically. That would take the maximum for a house to €14,500. There is still no SEAI grant for replacing a gas or oil boiler with another gas or oil boiler.

Who can do the work

Any work on a natural gas or LPG installation in an Irish home must, by law, be carried out by a Registered Gas Installer (RGI). The register used to be called RGII (Registered Gas Installers of Ireland); it is now run by Safe Energy Ireland on behalf of the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU), which appoints it as the Gas Safety Supervisory Body. When the job is finished, the RGI must give you a Declaration of Conformance certificate (also called a completion certificate), which records that the work is safe and to standard. You can look an installer up on the RGI scheme’s website before you book; see checking an RGI and the completion paperwork.

Oil boilers sit in a different regulatory position. There is no statutory register for oil boiler technicians in the Republic of Ireland: OFTEC certification shows the technician has completed approved training and assessment, and Selectra notes that using an OFTEC-registered technician is recommended rather than legally required. Replacing an existing oil boiler with a new one is still allowed in an existing home. What has changed is new building and public money: the Department of Housing says the Nearly Zero Energy Building rules in Part L of the Building Regulations have effectively phased out fossil fuel boilers in new dwellings, with fossil fuel boilers installed in less than 5% of new homes in 2023, and SEAI does not fund new oil or gas boilers.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a new gas boiler cost in Ireland?

Published 2026 price lists put a like-for-like gas boiler replacement at roughly €2,300–€4,900 supplied and fitted, including VAT, and Calor puts a typical replacement at €2,500–€4,500. Moving the boiler or upgrading the system costs more.

Is there a grant for a new gas or oil boiler?

No. SEAI grants cover heat pumps, insulation, heating controls and other measures, not like-for-like fossil fuel boilers. Older homeowners may get help to repair an existing boiler through the council’s Housing Aid for Older People Grant.

What is the new boiler scrappage grant?

A €2,000 payment, approved by the Government on 29 September 2026, for replacing a fossil fuel heating system with a heat pump or other renewable heating in a home built before 2021. RTÉ reports it starts in the first quarter of 2027; SEAI says existing heat pump applicants will get it automatically.

Do I need an RGI for a gas boiler?

Yes. Gas work in a home must by law be done by a Registered Gas Installer, and you should get a Declaration of Conformance certificate at the end.

Are these prices quotes?

No. They are published ranges and SEAI medians, checked in September 2026. Your price depends on your home, the system and the installer.
