Check both the registered business and the individual engineer’s qualifications for the work. Gas Safe registration is not one blanket permission for every gas appliance or fuel.

Before booking

1. Search the business on the official Gas Safe Register using its name, registration number or contact details.
2. Check that the record is current and that the details match the quote.
3. Ask which named engineer will attend and whether they are qualified for the appliance and work.
4. Confirm whether subcontractors will be used and which registered business accepts responsibility.
5. Keep the written scope, price and contact details.

A website badge, van logo or marketplace profile is not a register check.

At the door

Ask to see the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card. Check:

• photograph and name;
• unique licence number;
• start and expiry dates;
• security features; and
• the categories on the reverse showing the gas work they may undertake.

You can verify the licence number through the Register. If the card or person does not match, do not allow gas work to begin.

Match competence to the job

An engineer qualified for domestic natural-gas boilers may not automatically be qualified for LPG, commercial equipment, cookers or other categories. Describe the fuel, property and appliance when booking.

Registration also does not prove that unrelated electrical, roofing or building work is within the same person’s competence. Ask who handles each part and what certification applies.

After work

Keep the invoice, commissioning record and any required compliance notification. Check that guarantee registration and control instructions are completed where included. Report suspected illegal gas work through the official Gas Safe route.
