Timer versus thermostat
A timer says when heating may run. A thermostat compares sensed temperature with its setpoint and requests heat. Turning it higher does not normally make the home warm faster; it asks for a higher finishing temperature.
Room and radiator control
The main thermostat should represent the area it controls and should not fight with a closed TRV in the same space. TRVs help limit other rooms, but do not replace a correctly located central control or proper zoning where required.
Load compensation
Load compensation communicates the level of heat demand so a compatible boiler can vary its flow temperature. This can support steadier operation rather than using one fixed high target.
Weather compensation
Weather compensation uses outdoor temperature and a configured heating curve. In milder weather it can target a lower flow temperature; in colder conditions it raises the target. The controller, boiler and protocol must be compatible, and the curve needs commissioning for the building and emitters.
What to request in a quote
Ask for exact model numbers, communication method, zones served, sensor locations, hot-water control, setup and the handover demonstration. If a proposal relies on Boiler Plus or another building-standard requirement, ask the installer to identify the jurisdiction and compliant measure.
