Electric boiler versus heat pump
A resistance boiler uses approximately one unit of electricity at the appliance for one unit of heat, subject to system losses. A heat pump moves heat and can deliver several units of heat per unit of electricity under suitable conditions. Do not transfer heat-pump performance claims to an electric boiler.
Installation questions
- What is the room-by-room design heat loss?
- What electrical input and phase does the appliance require?
- Can the incoming supply, consumer unit and local network support it?
- Is hot water instantaneous, stored or separate?
- Are radiators sized for the proposed temperatures?
- What controls, zones and load management are included?
- Is service access adequate?
An electrician and heating designer may both be needed. A small appliance chosen to fit existing electrical capacity may not meet peak heat demand.
Model running cost transparently
Estimated heating electricity = useful heat demand ÷ assumed in-use efficiency.
Multiply by the tariff for the periods when heat is used. If storage or time-of-use operation is proposed, model how much demand can realistically shift. Keep standing charges and hot water visible.
Compare the same useful heat and comfort with alternatives. Do not use the gas/electric unit-price ratio alone without accounting for appliance/system efficiency.
Where it may fit
An electric boiler may suit a small, low-heat-loss property, a site without practical combustion or external-unit options, or a limited-use system. High heat demand can produce substantial electrical load and cost, so the conclusion must be property-specific.
